Introduction: Hello, and welcome to the RiAB blog. This blog is all about equipping you with the knowledge and tools to not only recover from injuries but also enhance your overall quality of life. Join me as we explore what RiAB is all about.

Who is the person behind RiAB?

Let me start by introducing myself. I am dr Susan de Beer, a biokineticist by profession and a health explorer by heart. I am the proud mother of three adventurous sons, and a devoted Christian.

I believe we should make the most of the life that was gifted to us and that we have a responsibility to physically and spiritually be the best we can and in doing so impact others positively.

My journey in the world of health and rehabilitation began with a background in biokinetics, and I have over 19 years of experience in private practice, six years in corporate settings, and four years as a lecturer. My current vision? To make rehabilitation more effective and accessible to everyone.

Key Concepts in Rehabilitation:

In my years of working with individuals on their rehabilitation journeys, I've learned some critical lessons:

  • We are all unique: there is NO one-size-fits-all solution and if you hear something that sounds too good to be true (it normally is)

  • Knowledge is power: but the knowledge you need may not be what you expect

  • Rehabilitation is hard work: rehabilitation often involves permanent lifestyle and workstyle changes, so it is important to do it in a sustainable way

  • Consistency is key: if you want to experience long-term success, you need to create healthy habits that become part of who you are.

A Comprehensive Approach:

My journey began as a biokineticist, working one-on-one with people to improve quality of life with movement (scientific exercise). Whereas a healthy lifestyle and being active came easy to me, I quickly realized that not everyone found this process easy. For some it is difficult to make lifestyle changes and they need personal assistance. I therefore expanded my role as biokineticist to include being a health coach as well. This dual role gives me the opportunity to use a more holistic approach where exercise, nutrition, stress, sleep, and mindset as interconnected components of health can all be considered and addressed to reach optimal levels of health and wellness.

RiAB's Evolution: From Dream to Reality

RiAB, short for Rehabilitation in a Box, started as a dream back in 2011 when I was recovering from surgery in St Lucia, a remote South African village (town). During my own rehabilitation process I experienced some of the challenges people face when they lack access to facilities and information. Over time, RiAB evolved to meet the diverse needs of individuals in various settings.

Discover, Uncover, Recover

RiAB's core philosophy is structured around three steps: Discovering why, uncovering how, and taking action to recover. It's more than an educational program; it offers practical guidance, focusing on goal setting and action planning. And the best part? RiAB comes in various options to cater to your preferences.

The DIY Solution

One of the latest breakthroughs in RiAB is the inclusion of the term "DIY." It emphasizes RiAB's role as a comprehensive DIY rehabilitation solution. It's all about simplifying the complex world of rehabilitation, offering knowledge, practical tools, and a roadmap for improving your health and well-being. Empowering you to play an active role in your rehabiltitation process.
